Instructions

1. Vulnerable Sector Police Check

To be covered under our Alberta Whitewater Association (AWA) insurance policy, all members over the age of 18 must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check (VSC) at least once, or possess an active Nexus Card. Coverage is also conditional on submitting an AWA disclosure form every year.

  • For residents of Edmonton and surrounding counties:

    • The VSC can be completed online for $25 at: https://www.policesolutions.ca/checks/services/edmonton/
    • When applying, select that you are a volunteer and that you instruct youth. This is important because many club activities involve minors and/ or other vulnerable sectors, and a standard police check is not sufficient; it must be the vulnerable sector check.
    • After completing the check, email your receipt to treasurer@paddleuaps.com and info@paddleuaps.com for reimbursement.
    • Your result will only be downloadable for 30 days after you receive it, so be sure to download a copy immediately. If you miss this 30 day deadline, you will need to restart this process, and pay out of pocket. We must have a downloaded copy of the result for our records, as the invoice alone will not suffice for insurance purposes.
    • Once downloaded, please send your results to policecheck@paddleuaps.com.
    • Finally, please fill out this form to add your screening into our database.
    • For residents of Calgary:

      • The VSC can be completed online for $25, but you first need a volunteer letter from AWA.
      • To request this letter, email coordinator@albertawhitewater.ca and admin@albertawhitewater.ca, providing your full legal name, date of birth, and current address.
      • Once you have the letter, complete the online check at: https://www.policesolutions.ca/checks/services/calgary/
      • As with Edmonton, select that you are a volunteer and instruct youth. Only the vulnerable sector check is accepted.
      • Email your receipt to treasurer@paddleuaps.com and info@paddleuaps.com for reimbursement.
      • Your result will only be downloadable for 90 days after you receive it, so be sure to download a copy immediately. If you miss this 90 day deadline, you will need to restart this process, and pay out of pocket. We must have a downloaded copy of the result for our records, as the invoice alone will not suffice for insurance purposes.
      • Once downloaded, send your results to policecheck@paddleuaps.com
      • Finally, please fill out this form to add your screening into our database.
      2. Safe Sport
      • Sign in to your account at www.thelocker.coach.ca
      • Navigate to: Elearning > Multi Sport > Safe Sport. When prompted, select “Canoe Kayak Canada” as your sport and check off “coach” as your role.
      • Complete the course. Before closing the course tab, take a screenshot of the completion page. (This is important in case there are issues with the system recording your credit.)
      • After closing the tab, your credit should appear immediately. To confirm, go to Profile > Certification and scroll down to find the Safe Sport credit.
      • If your credit does not appear, email coach@coach.ca with your screenshot to request that your completion be recorded.
      • Please fill out this form to add your training into our database.

        3. AWA Disclosure Form (annually)

        4. Making Ethical Decisions

        • MED training is part of your Lake Instructor certification. Once your Lake Instructor course has been entered into The Locker, you should be able to access the MED evaluation for free. If you cannot access the evaluation for free, please email your Lake Instructor Trainer—your training may not have been credited yet.
        • Sign in at www.thelocker.coach.ca
        • Go to: Elearning > Multi Sport > NCCP Make Ethical Decisions (MED) Online Evaluation > Begin.
        • If prompted, select “Canoe Kayak Canada” as your sport and check off your role as a coach.
        • Complete the evaluation. Before closing the tab, take a screenshot of your completion page. (This is important as some instructors have experienced issues receiving credit.) After closing the evaluation tab, your credit should appear immediately. To verify, go to Profile > Certification and scroll down to find the MED entry. If your credit does not appear, email your screenshot to coach@coach.ca and request that your completion be recorded.
        • Please fill out this form to add your training into our database.

          5. Making Headway in Sport

          • Sign in at www.thelocker.coach.ca
          • Select Profile > Certification > Maintenance to view your current PD points. To report, select "Self Report" on the left hand side.
          • You can report the following activities: Instructing for the year (1 point per year), Webinars attended (e.g., UAPS Instructor Debrief/Planning, UAPS Whitewater Safety Session — 1 point per hour), Swiftwater rescue courses (3 points), First aid courses (3 points)
          • Most certifications require 12 PD points over 3 years to maintain. If your certification expires, you will need to redo your evaluation
          • Under Maintenance, you can also complete free NCCP courses if you need more PD points. “Making Headway in Sport” is now required and  worth 5 points.
          • Please fill out this form to add your training into our database.

            6. PD Points

            • Navigate to: Elearning > Multi Sport > Making Headway in Sport.
            • Complete the course.
            • Before closing the course tab, take a screenshot of your completion page. (This is important, as we have experienced issues where instructors did not receive credit.)
            • After closing the course tab, your credit should appear immediately. To check, go to: Profile > Certification and scroll down to see if your Making Headway in Sport credit is listed. If you do not see the credit, email your screenshot to coach@coach.ca and request that your completion be recorded.
            • Please fill out this form to add your training into our database.

                  7. Swiftwater Rescue

                  • Swiftwater Rescue and Safety training is required for all activities involving whitewater. This training would include: basic whitewater rescue techniques (hazard awareness, equipment knowledge, safety preparation and planning, basic self-rescue and extraction skills).
                  • Please fill out this form to add your training into our database.

                  8. Standard First Aid

                  • All instructors and leaders must be trained in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (including AED) and Concussion protocols if a lifeguard is not present.  Standard first aid is valid for 3 years.
