Novice Progression Program (NPP)

** Applications for 2026 will open in February! Please email bdp@paddleuaps.com with any questions.

If you are ready to move from following a leader down a run to being part of a team, our Novice Progression Program (NPP) offers a great opportunity for growth. This program is designed for BDP graduates who are proficient in the skills learned within BDP (eddy turns, ferrying, S-turns, surfing, jet ferrying, rolling, T-rescuing, and swimming) and have spent time paddling outside of BDP.

In the NPP, you'll learn how to set up safety for rapids on your own, select lines, and scout effectively from both boat and shore. You will also learn how to get off and on the river in difficult locations and how to evacuate off runs. You’ll develop the skills necessary to navigate rapids independently, preparing you for runs with your peers. It is strongly recommended to take wilderness first aid and swiftwater rescue before or while taking this course, such that you can practice the skills learned within the NPP.

The NPP will run alongside the Beginner Development Program (BDP), so we'll camp together and share stories around the campfire about the day’s adventures. While we’ll primarily paddle the same rivers, the NPP will focus on exploring new sections and building skills related to leadership and group management. The goal is to help you gain the confidence to explore new rivers with your crew safely and enjoyably. Due to the ratios set by Canoe Kayak Canada, this course is limited to six participants. If you do not meet the criteria, or we have a maximum number of participants, we will suggest how you can continue growing as a paddler, and encourage you to apply again in 2026.

Enrollment is limited to 6 paddlers per season.
